“Writing is the Last Line of Defense”: An Interview with Palestinian Poet Yahya Al Hamarna

Yahya Al Hamarna is a Palestinian writer, researcher, and refugee from the Gaza Strip. He studied Political Science, International Relations, and Diplomacy at Al-Azhar University in Gaza. His writing focuses on human rights, justice, international law, and global politics, while his poetry explores memory, exile, love, and survival in times of war. His work carves deeply into the living memory of Palestine, preserving the voices, places, and everyday moments that violence seeks to erase. His poignant debut poetry collection, My Voice Cannot Be Bombed, was published by Iskra Books in 2025. Through social media, excerpts have travelled around the world, and a full French translation by Elissa Kayal and Nada Sattouf has most recently been published by Éditions de la Rue Dorion in Quebec and Burn∼Août in France....

Angelina Guo is a writer, translator and researcher born in Montreal, Canada. She holds a bachelor's degree in French Literature and East Asian Studies from McGill University and a master's in French from Sorbonne University and the École normale supérieure. Her first poetry collection, Comparution, published by Le Quartanier in 2024, was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award.

郭佳(Angelina Guo)出生於加拿大蒙特婁，現為作家、譯者及研究者。她是麥基爾大學法文文學與東亞研究學士，索邦大學與巴黎高等師範學院法文碩士。她的首部詩集 Comparution 於2024年由 Le Quartanier 出版，並入圍了加拿大總督文學獎。
